Writer Problems

Hello all-
I hope you are having a wonderful summer. Here in Kansas, the heat has arrived with a vengeance. I think we went from early spring to mid-summer. I hope you are finding some relief from the heat. Mostly, we are hiding out during the hottest parts of the day and doing what we can the rest of the time.
I am hard at work on the sequel to Night Blind. Due to my attention to detail, and my awesome beta readers who are not afraid to call me to task, I am doing some heavy rewrites on Flip Side.
I am so excited to be moving forward on this project and at the same time, feeling frustrated at the sheer amount of work needed to get this book into a rough draft. Luckily, a fellow author put me in touch with a former Titan missile commander and he was able to put some of the details into perspective. Although I am dealing with a decommissioned Atlas F silo, some of the details are the same. Many of them are vastly different.I am having fun and stretching my imagination at the same time.
I quit my third job this summer. It was getting in the way of my writing and it was making my soul weary. For me to be an angel to my home care patients, I have to have some of me left over to give. The job took that away from me.
Anyway, it is late here and I need to get some sleep. Now that I have the internet back up and running and I have my ancient laptop back on line, I should be able to stay in touch more easily.
Thanks for hanging in there with me. I wouldn’t be able to do this without all of you supporting me.
Much love,
angel

New Year and News

Hello all!

It’s barely been a month since the year started, but there have been several major changes for me. I found a job as an administrative assistant in an electronics store- NOT one of the big box ones. It’s a family business and I am learning about computers, inventory, stock, part numbers, ordering, and filing. I had a good basis of some of these things but now it’s grown exponentially.

I’ve also released several books since this summer. My first of the Kansas Vampire Series- Night Blind- is live, as well as my short story book, Paranormal Bites. One of the stories in  Paranormal Bites is a prequel to the new novel, Night Moves. Light Shards and Shadow Dances is my poetry book. There is also a charity anthology, Surrender in the Darkness, that has a story, Psyched Out, with one of my new characters, Cipri.

Today I am home from work because of freezing rain that changed over to snow. It’s still snowing, four hours later. The roads were icy with a snow-pack and I had a difficult time getting up one hill to get out of town. I decided since I was caught up at work, and my job is a 35 mile commute- one way, I wasn’t going to risk it. Luckily, my boss was okay with it.

I am currently editing my next book in the Kansas Vampire Series. My character, Isys, has finally settled down a bit since her first book was released. Now I just have to figure out how to weave her story in with the rest of the new characters.

I do hope your 2016 has been better than mine has been to me. I promise not to wait so long next time. Stay warm and safe!

Hello my freaky ones!

Still the same vampire. Still in Kansas. Still belly dancing me, just a new address. isysthevampire.wordpress.com

Character Woes

Hello all;

Lately my character IsistheVampire has been concerned about her name and the bad image associated with the name Isis. She decided to change her name to Isys. To appease her, I had to make her a new blog page at https://isysthevampire.wordpress.com.

Well, I have a book of short stories coming out this summer, “Paranormal Bites”. It will contain some previously published stories from anthologies as well as some new ones as well.  I am working on a book of poetry, due out later this summer.

I have to get back to setting up Isys with her new domain. Stay cool. Stay safe.

until later-

Mortality and Health

Hello,
This post is a little more somber than most. My writer just found out she has skin cancer. She assures me it is the treatable kind that doesn’t spread and they can just whack it off. This is still very upsetting to me.

This is my writer’s LIFE! Okay, so I’m a vampire. But that doesn’t mean I want those around me that I love to die sooner than they should from preventable and treatable causes. My writer is careful most of the time about what she eats and she makes sure to exercise several times a week. She doesn’t tan and tries to avoid sunburns. She follows her doctor’s orders. Now, she will have to keep a watch out on her skin, use sunscreen, and wear hats and long sleeves. This won’t be too hard for her to do. She’s a Goth girl at heart.

Most people don’t take care of themselves like they should until it is too late. Take some time for some self-care. It’s not selfish. Take the time to exercise. Feed yourself well. Slow down and reduce your stress. Go to the doctor for checkups. If you don’t like to go to the doctor, change that. Find a new doctor. Make a few simple changes, then sit back and enjoy the results.

I will go with my writer on Friday afternoon for a second appointment to make sure they got it all. She assures me the excision is not terribly painful and it’s not a big thing. I don’t like my writer being cut on, but I am glad she is taking care of things.

I can assure you I will be keeping an eye on my writer’s health. I promise I will keep you all updated.

until next time, my little freaky ones,

Yay? I’ve been Pirated!

Hello!

Lately many of my author friends have found their books on some free torrent site under someone else’s user name. Today I found I “won the lottery”. In other words, my alter ego was pirated.

Some people say, “What’s the big deal? I’m just sharing,” or “Your book is only .99.” Okay, would you like it if I took something you worked hard on, were proud of, and put it out there for FREE? You get NOTHING for it but I get to make a few pennies on YOUR HARD WORK. Somehow, when the tables are turned, it’s not such a wonderful thing.
I don’t use pirate sites. I don’t endorse them. I wish they ALL would be taken down.

There is nothing wrong with someone putting their stuff out there. If they want to do it for free, fine. But don’t take someone else’s hard work and cheat them out of it by putting it out there for free. Okay, so one of my ebooks is only .99. Would you want to give .99 to 786 people? That’s a lot of money! Well, one pirate site reported 786 downloads of my novella for FREE.

I spent most of my morning, instead of writing and editing, running down these torrent and free ebook sites. I had to write a cease and desist, take my stuff down NOW letter for EACH site. Hunting down the source of these shared files, notifying the host servers, and proving I am the real owner of the work is- well, it’s WORK. I’m playing whack-a-pirate instead of working on my next book. Hours wasted that I could have been WRITING.

“Free ebook downloads” are NOT free! They cost the authors in time and lost revenue. If caught, it can cost the pirates money and their site. Unfortunately, the pirates don’t seem to care. The only thing we can do is look out for each other. If you see an author’s stuff on a free site, NOTIFY THE AUTHOR! If it is on somewhere like Amazon.com and you KNOW the work is pirated, NOTIFY THE COMPANY! One evening I noticed a copy of “City of Bones” under the WRONG NAME along with four more pages of popular titles with the wrong artwork and wrong names. I notified the authors I could, messaged customer service, and stayed online with them until it was clear the user was a pirate of ebooks. A few hours later, the user and pirated works were GONE.

PLEASE! PLEASE! Don’t use pirate sites. Some of the unscrupulous characters actually put malware into the PDFs and if you use their site, you might get a nasty virus or Trojan horse or worse.

I can’t say enough how much I appreciate each of my fans! Without you, I wouldn’t be here! Thank you for your support! So please, if you see a pirated book, let the author know. Our first line of defense is our fans! YOU hold the power to keep our stuff out of the wrong hands by NOT uploading to pirate/free share sites and by calling out all the sites! I know it is a lot to ask, but it will keep me and other authors (not just the Indies) writing for a long time to come.

again. THANK YOU TO MY FANS!

until later, when my temper cools,

angel

Just a Name- or is it?

Hello my little dark ones,

This weekend, something happened to a friend of my writer. This belly dancer pal has a bumper sticker and received a rather ignorant and nasty note on her car. The bumper sticker has been on her vehicle for many years and is belly dancer themed, However, some ill-tempered fool decided to leave a note. The bumper sticker says “Isis Isis Ra Ra Ra”. Some rude person left a note suggesting my white, American-born friend relocate and go do a physical impossibility.

This has upset my writer. She has suggested I change my name. After all, I am Isis the Vampire. I thought about it for a moment, then decided. It is not my fault the media uses the improper acronym in news reports. It is not my fault people are ignorant and do not know the difference in an acronym and a name. Why should I change who I am? Would any of you, my little ones, want to change your name due to politics? Many times in the past, people have changed their names because of the political climate. For some people, changing their name is the right thing for them to do. Some have had no choice in the matter. Some, like my writer, have lost some of their family history and heritage.

The political climate is unsettling. There are injustices and atrocities happening and have happened throughout history. We are destined to repeat our mistakes unless we make conscious choices. Follow your conscience. Judge people by their actions and react accordingly.

For me, I choose to stay true to who I am. I shall remain Isis the Kansas Vampire. I am braced for snark, ignorance, hateful words, and general rude behavior. I survived hateful words before. The only ones I worry about are my writer, her family, and her friends. My writer assures me that she will be fine. After all, she survived being ostracized before.

I do hope you will choose to educate and inform yourselves. I do hope that you will not judge everyone based on the actions of a few.

So, for now, I will hope for the best. I will keep my name as it is. I will judge people by their actions. But, if you tick me off, I cannot guarantee I won’t suck you dry like a teenager with a gas station slushy. Oops. Did I say that? Anyway. I hope you choose information and education instead of ignorance and hate.

Until next time,

Isis the Vampire

Trolls, Trolls, Everywhere

hello my freaky ones!

I need to warn you. I will be on a tear tonight. I am irritated at what has happened in my author’s world today. Someone decided to report a whole bunch of authors as spammers. Consequently, they are unable to post about their releases until AFTER their new book is live. This cuts down on the publicity for the authors and can damage sales.

What I can’t understand is WHY??? Is it petty jealousy? Is it an attempt by one author to get rid of the competition so the sales will be better? Is it ingorance? Or is it simply pure hate? The kind of person who would report 90% of the authors allied with one online niche publisher must be a different sort indeed. I wish this troll to see the significance of their actions and let their actions come back to them.

I am irritated. I am angry. Unfortunately for MY writer, she has been caught up in the peripherals of this. She cannot share certain posts, comment on some things, and is wondering when she will be put in temporary jail herself. (I keep telling her not to worry.)

So to combat the trolls, I made sure to post as much as I could about this, to Tweet about it, and to use the hashtag #onehouseunited to show my support of all indie authors.

Indies Unite!

Okay, my writer came home early and I have to go. She needs the computer to do some editing and work. Thanks again for letting me vent. (My writer says it is much better than me hunting down the person or people that did this and eating them.) Until next time,

xoxox
